Yeah, yeah, we know brainstorming is a bit hard, especially when your group is just getting started. So to help, we made a list of events you could use in your school!

Commercial Contest

This major event will require a lot of work, but it’s definitely worth it. You’ll need a lot of co-operation from the teachers in your school. Start by asking the drama teachers to give up two periods for this contest.

Students will be required to work in small groups to create an anti-tobacco commercial to be presented to the class. The class will vote for their favourite commercial and one group from the classroom will be entered into a school-wide contest. The winning group will have their commercial recorded and then shown at the next school assembly.

Choose two guest judges (e.g., teachers, Peel Health nurses or extinguish members). You decide who the judges will be. At the assembly, get them to vote on the best commercial in the entire school, and the winners will get a prize!

Door Decorating Contest

This contest gives all classes one week to decorate their homeroom door with anti-tobacco images and messages. At the end of the week, your group can vote on which door was the most creative. Prizes can include a pizza party for the winning class!

Smoke-Free Fair

Pick a day for your group to set up a fair with different booths, all related to the anti-tobacco movement. You can have a trivia booth, a stand with brochures and handouts, a games booth, etc. Ask Peel Health nurses and extinguish to help you run some booths at your fair. Classes can come throughout the day to visit these booths and learn more about tobacco issues. Contact extinguish for a list of organizations to help with your fair.

Blue Ribbon Campaign

This campaign sells ribbons to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco. It’s a good way to raise money for local charities or for other anti-tobacco events. Take a look at their how-to guide.

Candygrams

A candygram is candy with a message that you can have delivered to your friends’ classrooms. You can include an anti-tobacco message with their candygrams to raise awareness.

Bake Sales

Bake sales are a lot of fun! Ask people in your school, be it group members or teachers, to bake goodies to sell at lunchtime to fundraise. The money raised can go towards a charity (like the Canadian Cancer Society) or to help with your group’s next project.

Guest Speakers

Guest speakers are great for assemblies that take place during National Non-Smoking Week. You can contact extinguish to help book speakers for your school.

If you have any questions or comments on how to hold any of the events above, please feel free to contact us!
