Smoke-Free Cars
Becomes Law

As of January 21, 2009, you will no longer be able to smoke inside a vehicle if a child under 16 is inside.

If you are 16 and over and caught breaking this law, you will be fined.  This new law applies to both drivers and passengers.

Why is this new law needed?
  • Children are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.
  • Children exposed to second-hand smoke are more likely to get ear infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, and other respiratory tract infections.  It can also trigger or worsen asthma.
  • Second-hand smoke can reach very high levels inside of small spaces like vehicles.
  • There is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke for children or adults.

Opening a window or using the car’s fan to try and remove the smoke just doesn’t work.  If you need to smoke, take it outside.
